St. Petronius of Prodromou united a learned mind with a humble heart. Formed in the monasteries of Romania and the prayerful gatherings of the Burning Bush movement, he endured the trials of communist persecution and later helped renew the Romanian Skete of Prodromou on Mount Athos. Through decades of prayer and devoted service, he became a spiritual father who led first and foremost through example and whose wisdom and gentleness brought consolation to monks and pilgrims alike.
The Wisdom of Humility introduces readers to this beloved Elder and recently glorified saint through an account of his life, selections from his writings, interviews, and the recollections of those who knew him. His teachings on repentance, the Jesus Prayer, the guarding of the conscience, and love for one's neighbor offer guidance for all who seek to live faithfully in Christ. Behind his words stands the example of a man who taught through his own prayer, patience, and self-giving.
The volume also includes accounts of Elder Julian of Prodromou, his fellow ascetic, and St. Olympiada, his mother, who was also recently numbered among the saints and whose faith and mercy reveal the depth of holiness nurtured in a Romanian village home. Together, these testimonies invite readers to discover how humility opens the heart to God's grace and how an entire life can become prayer.
