The hermit John David (1920–1995) spent many years tending sheep in the mountains of Transylvania before withdrawing to the secluded hermitage of Strungari. There he embraced a life of prayer, fasting, and watchfulness. The Psalter was his constant companion, and he sought to live every moment in the presence of God. Though he lived in obscurity, those who came to know him encountered far more than an ordinary shepherd. Beneath his simple outward appearance was a man of deep spiritual discernment whose hidden life in Christ touched countless souls. He fled praise, concealed the grace God had bestowed upon him, and desired only to remain unknown. This English edition is based on the original Romanian volume collected and edited by Hieroschemamonk Ignatius Bozianu of the Kellion of St. Hypatius on Mount Athos. It brings together the recollections of monks, nuns, priests, physicians, villagers, and pilgrims who knew Brother John personally, preserving the living memory of a man whose witness continues to console, inspire, and strengthen the faithful. More than a biography, The Lord Is My Shepherd is an invitation to encounter one of the hidden ascetics of twentieth-century Romania, a humble shepherd and hermit whose life bears witness to the transforming power of prayer and repentance.
